Eligibility to be a principal investigator is granted by payroll title (see Eligibility to serve as a PI). By exception to policy (ETP), the Vice Chancellor for Research (or designee) may approve other appointees to serve as PI in special circumstances when
- such action is in the best interest of the university, and
- space and facilities can be assigned without detriment to the regular instructional and research responsibilities of the university.
Duration
A PI ETP may be approved for:
- Being PI on a specified proposal and associated awards, for their duration.
- Being PI on a human subjects research study, for its duration.
- Being PI on an IACUC protocol, for its duration.
Authority
What does a PI ETP allow you to do? For the duration of the approved PI ETP, the recipient:
- Can serve as a PI or co-PI on proposals and awards
- Can serve as a PI on IRB studies (human subjects). PI eligibility is not required to be a co-PI for IRB studies.
- Can serve as a PI on IACUC protocols (animal subjects). PI eligibility is not required to be a co-respondent for IACUC protocols.
Approval of a PI ETP does not authorize you to serve as supervisor for employees (staff, postdocs, specialists, academic research titles or GSRs), even when these titles are included in the proposal budget. Your payroll title determines supervisory authorization. Contact your department/sponsoring unit for more information.
