Department of Defense (DOD)
In addition to submitting amendment forms for any changes and getting approval from the IACUC, DOD expects the PI to also submit changes to its Animal Care and Use Review Office (ACURO) for review and before initiation as stated in the initial approval memo sent to the PI from ACURO upon review and approval of their protocol. See the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command website for more details.

The requirements to support animal research under funding from these agencies are all managed by OLAW (the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare at the NIH). Some of the requirements include a current institutional PHS Assurance Statement, congruency reviews between the funding proposal and the animal study protocol, animal procedures training, and recognizing the principles of animal welfare. Before submitting the initial IACUC protocol or a proposed amendment, researchers should ensure that the scope of work, species, numbers, agents and methods for them, procedures, and euthanasia methods are consistent between the funded award and the objectives described in the proposal.
