CITI Training for Non-Biomedical Protocols

Instructions for new CITI users

Go to citiprogram.org

Click on “Register.”

For Step 1: In the field “Search for organization: Enter full or partial name" type/select University of California, Santa Cruz and click the check box to agree to the terms of service for accessing CITI program materials. Then click the button at the bottom of the page that says “Continue To Step 2.”

For Step 2: Fill out the required “First Name,” “Last Name,” “Email Address,” and “Verify email address,” fields. (Optional: Fill out “Secondary email address and “Verify secondary email address" fields. Then click the button at the bottom of the page that says “Continue To Step 3.”

For Step 3: Fill out the required “User Name,” “Password,” “Verify Password,” “Security Question,” and “Security Answer” fields. Then click the button at the bottom of the page that says “Continue To Step 4.”

For Step 4: In the “Country of Residence” field type/select United States. Then click the button at the bottom of the page that says “Continue To Step 5.”

For Step 5: For the “Are you interested in the option of receiving Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credit for completed CITI Program courses?” select the “No” radio button. Select a radio button option for “Can CITI Program contact you at a later date regarding participation in research surveys?” Then click the button at the bottom of the page that says “Continue To Step 6.”

For Step 6: Fill out the required “Institutional Email Address” field—note: you’re not required to use a UCSC email address, but, if possible, please match to the email address that’s on the UCSC IACUC protocol application or amendment that you’re planning to submit. For “Which Course Do you Plan to Take? select the “Laboratory Animal Welfare” option from the drop down menu—note recent change in instructions: CITI is fixing a glitch in their system so if "Laboratory Animal Welfare" is not an option, please select any available option to move to the next step. Then click the button at the bottom of the page that says “Continue To Step 7.”

For Step 7: For the “What course are you interested in?” check the box for “LabAnimal Welfare.” Click the button at the bottom of the page that says “Next."

For the next step: Check the box for “C. Non Biomedical-Research.” Click the button at the bottom of the page that says “Next.” On the next page, click on the “Finalize my registration” button at the bottom of the page.

Click on the text “Group C: Non Biomedical-Research.”

Click on the “Complete The Integrity Statement before beginning the Course” text. Review the CITI Program Terms of Service, click the radio button for either "I AGREE..." and click the button at the button of the page that says "Submit." If you agree, you will be redirected back to the course modules. Complete the required modules and associated quizzes with an aggregate score of 60% or higher. A running tally is compiled in a grade book. If you want to improve one or more quiz scores, you may repeat them.

Instructions for a returning CITI user

Go to citiprogram.org

Login with your username and password.

In the Main Menu expand the University of California, Santa Cruz Courses drop down and in the “My Learner Tools for University of California, Santa Cruz,” click on “Add a Course."

For Select Curriculum: For the “What course are you interested in?” check the box for “LabAnimal Welfare.” Click the button at the bottom of the page that says “Next."

For the next step: Check the box for “C. Non Biomedical-Research.” Click the button at the bottom of the page that says “Submit.”

In the Main Menu under the expandable the University of California, Santa Cruz Courses section, click on the text “Group C: Non Biomedical-Research.”

Click on the “Complete The Integrity Statement before beginning the Course” text. Review the CITI Program Terms of Service, click the radio button for either "I AGREE..." and click the button at the button of the page that says "Submit." If you agree, you will be redirected back to the course modules. Complete each module(s) that says “Incomplete” in the “Date Completed” column (these are the outstanding modules that UC Santa Cruz requires that your other affiliation(s) did not.)

Instructions for a returning CITI user affiliated with another institution

Login with your username and password.

In the Main Menu, expand "Click here to affiliate with another institution" and click on the text "Click here to affiliate with another institution."

In the "Search for organization field" type/select "University of California, Santa Cruz." Click the button at the bottom of the page that says “Next.”

In the Main Menu under the expandable the University of California, Santa Cruz Courses section, click on the text “Group C: Non Biomedical-Research.”

If the status of the Group C course status says "Passed DD-MM-YYYY" then you’ve successfully passed the course and you’re done. If the course status says “Incomplete,” click on the text "Group C: Non Biomedical-Research."

View-Print-Share CITI Certificate of Completion

To view and download a certificate of training completion, go to the Main Menu/My Courses page and in the "Completion Record" column click "View-Print-Share."

Joining your multiple CITI accounts

If you would like to merge two learner accounts, please send an email to  support@citiprogram.org and include the following information:

  • Your first and last name.
  • The name of your institution.
  • The username or Member ID for the account to keep.
  • The username or Member ID for the account to merge.
