CITI Requirements

The CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative) program provides web-based animal care and use educational courses designed to meet U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) requirements for basic training in the human care and use of animals. The UCSC IACUC requires completing certain courses depending on the protocol type, and on a case by case basis other courses may be required.

CITI training requirements for different protocol types

Full use biomedical protocol (with contact): This protocol requires completing/passing all of the modules of the "Group B: Biomedical Course for Vivarium Users" training course. Personnel named as performing surgery must also complete/pass module "Aseptic Surgery," and all modules of "Post-Procedure Care of Mice and Rats in Research: Minimizing Pain and Distress," and if applicable "Working with Mice in Research" and/or "Working with Rats in Research." Learn more about signing up for these training course(s).

Full use non-biomedical protocol (with contact): This protocol requires completing/passing all of the modules of the "Group C: Non-Biomedical Research" training course. Personnel named as performing surgery must also complete/pass module "Aseptic Surgery" of "Group B: Biomedical Course for Vivarium Users" course and all modules of "Post-Procedure Care of Mice and Rats in Research: Minimizing Pain and Distress," and if applicable "Working with Mice in Research" and/or "Working with Rats in Research." Learn more about signing up for these training course(s).

Observation and sample protocols (no contact): These protocols require completing/passing all of the modules of the "Group A: For Non-Contact Research Only" training course. Learn more about signing up for the Group A training course.
