Cayuse Human Ethics

Beginning May 1, 2021, the Office of Research Compliance Administration began to use the web-based product Cayuse Human Ethics for managing human subjects research studies. Cayuse Human Ethics is an electronic protocol management platform that is cloud-based, user-friendly, and secure.

Cayuse Human Ethics enables collaboration and increases efficiency among investigators, ORCA, and IRB committee members. It allows investigators to prepare, submit, and route human subjects research studies with secure electronic document technology.

Cayuse Human Ethics will be used to prepare and submit all initial human subjects research studies, as well as make modifications, request renewals, and report incidents.

Log in to Cayuse Human Ethics

To access Cayuse Human Ethics, go to https://ucsc.cayuse424.com/rs/irb/ and enter your UCSC CruzID and Gold password.

If you get a blank page upon log in, refresh your browser tab. If this does not resolve the issue, try logging into the Cayuse Research Suite at https://ucsc.cayuse424.com/ and selecting the link Cayuse IRB (Human Studies Compliance). If this does not resolve your issue email orca@ucsc.edu for assistance.

If you try to log in and get an error message, follow the Create a Cayuse Account instructions. This error message may say "We're sorry. This account has been disabled on the Cayuse424 system." even if the account has never been created.

Create a Cayuse Account

Each investigator will need to have a Cayuse account before they can be added to a study submission. If you try to log in and get an error message, or if you know that you do not have a Cayuse account, fill out and submit the Cayuse Request form.

The UCSC IRB oversees research conducted by UCSC faculty, staff, and students and will sometimes review on behalf of non-affiliated collaborators.

Some places in Cayuse Human Ethics (e.g. the "Research Personnel" section) display information about people. If the name, phone or organization (department or unit) shown for a person needs updating, use the Cayuse Request form and choose option "Update User Information". Please note that:

  • Name used is the person's lived name. Instructions for changing lived name
  • Email address in Cayuse needs to be the researcher's assigned CruzID@ucsc.edu, not an email alias. If a different email address than expected is shown for a researcher, please confirm their assigned CruzID before submitting a request to update information.

  • Address is always in reference to the main UC Santa Cruz campus address.
