IATC Strategic Initiative

Beginning in 2016-17, the Office of Research has embarked on the first phase of a new, comprehensive, and integrated approach to supporting our faculty research industry relations/technology transfer.

The prior Office of Management of Intellectual Property (OMIP) is now part of a larger vision, the office of Industry Alliances and Technology Commercialization (IATC).

In the summer of 2016, Mohamed Abousalem joined the Office of Research as the Assistant Vice Chancellor for IATC. In this role, Dr. Abousalem oversees a new portfolio of reorganized technology transfer services, including IP management & licensing, industry alliances, and entrepreneurship support.

IATC Mission

Build a vibrant, entrepreneurial culture to accelerate the adoption of UCSC inventions, cultivate sustainable strategic partnerships, and enable our campus to be an innovation powerhouse delivering social and economic benefits to our local and global communities.

Vision

UCSC IATC will be the recognized leader in building, growing, and running a productive, collaborative, and efficient tech transfer and innovation support office for a public university.

Objectives

  • Expand the UCSC IP portfolio in research areas that currently have high commercial interest or societal benefit, have not historically engaged IATC, or are significant research strengths for UCSC
  • Increase the number of opportunities for UCSC students and faculty to collaborate with a wide spectrum of industry partners
  • Accelerate the commercialization of innovations resulting from UCSC research through licensing and startups benefiting the local economy
  • Increase UCSC revenue from industry-sponsored research and IP licensing
