Office of Research Seed Funding Initiatives

Seed Funding Initiative logoThe Office of Research provides seed funding at various levels to advance research and creative work and enhance competitiveness for extramural funding. Information on specific funding initiatives is disseminated to the campus community through divisions and institutes; competitions are run through InfoReady. The focus and funding level of individual competitions will vary, but we expect those listed below to be offered regularly. Please contact vcr@ucsc.edu with any questions.

Current Opportunities

Seed Funding for Center-scale Initiatives

The program is intended to prepare collaborative teams to submit competitive “center-scale” proposals or make pitches to funders and promoters to advance major creative productions. “Center-scale” references scope rather than any current or future campus status.

Proposals may focus on scholarship, or on implementing and evaluating institutional mechanisms to support retention and success of faculty and students from underrepresented groups. Only proposals from multi-investigator teams will be considered; multi-disciplinary teams and those that include community partners (as appropriate) will be prioritized. Proposals should build on established work and relationships. Between $75,000 and $150,000 may be requested to support activities over up to a two-year period. Proposals are encouraged from all divisions and disciplines on campus.

Please see InfoReady for additional information and the solicitation. Proposals are due June 30, 2023.

Closed Opportunities

Seed Funding for Early-stage Initiatives

The program supports early-stage, developmental activities that have not previously received funding from public or private sources. Awards were made in 2022.

Additional seed funding and similar support may be available through the Academic Senate Committee on Research, the Arts Research Institute, The Humanities Institute, the Institute for Social Transformation, CITRIS, and the Center for Coastal Climate Resilience.
