Identify funding opportunity
Involved: PI, Research Development
- Generate ideas.
- Search for applicable funding opportunities.
- Align funding opportunity and research goals.
Develop proposal
Involved: PI, Research Development, Proposal Administration
- Develop research question, collaborators, and proposal structure.
- Prepare ancillary documents (biosketches, facilities documents, other support, etc.).
- Develop budget.
- Establish subaward commitments.
- Write, edit, and review proposal.
Route and submit
Involved: Office of Sponsored Projects
- Review all proposal elements for compliance with institutional, sponsor, and legal requirements.
- Ensure alignment with institutional approvals and deadlines.
- Submit proposal following PI review.
Post-submission requests
Involved: PI, Proposal Administration, Office of Sponsored Projects, research compliance as needed
- Review and submit Just-in-Time requests.
- Prepare and submit budget revisions.
- Complete IRB, IACUC, or other certification requirements.
Award notification
Involved: Funder, Office of Sponsored Projects, Extramural Funds office, PI’s research accountant
- Receive, review, and negotiate award from funder.
- Release award to campus, including OSP notification to PI.
Award management
Involved: PI, PI’s research accountant, Extramural Funds office
- Manage financial and technical progress.
- Establish vendor contracts.
- Prepare and submit scientific/technical progress reports.
- Prepare and submit financial reports.
Involved: PI, PI’s research accountant, Office of Sponsored Projects
- Review and submit requests for prior approvals.
- Submit no cost time extension requests.
- Establish subawards.
Award close-out
Involved: PI, Extramural Funds office, Innovation Transfer, inventory/equipment contact
- Prepare and submit final scientific/technical reports.
- Prepare and submit final financial report.
- Prepare and submit applicable institutional reports and disclosures.
Research compliance
